Engagement Style Guide | Outfit Planning | Des Moines Iowa Wedding Photographer

Hello There!!!

Congratulations on your engagement! This is such an exciting time in your life and one of my most favorite things is engagement sessions! It’s such a wonderful way to capture your short time to be engaged and gives you some nice lifestyle photos of you and your fiancé!

A big component to having a successful engagement session is your wardrobe! This is where you can show personal style, and also let you and your love really pop! The wrong outfits can actually distract from you being the focus! Remember, these are suggestions and style is always subjective, I have found success with these style tips!

Style tips for her:

Have you thought about rocking a sequined gown, tulle skirt or flower crown but just never had an occasion for it? This is your chance to do it up! Remember, there is no such thing as “too dressed up” when it comes to your engagement session, so don’t be afraid to have some fun!

One thing I suggest is to have one dressy outfit and one casual. This can be anywhere from a simple sundress for one outfit, and jeans and a cute blouse, to A ball gown, or long flowy maxi dress or skirt, and then business casual attire for your 2 outfit options.

Materials that allow movement or have a nice pattern, photography beautify!  Lexi is wearing a stunning sequin dress with a bold pattern while Beau stays in solid colors. This was an excellent outfit choice! Also, if you look at the above photo, KayeLea’s kimono has tons of movement! It adds such a nice touch when the wind blows through fabric!

Here is an example of KayeLea and Cameron. The first dress is a fitted Calvin Kline, with matching pumps. Her second outfit are some light washed ripped jeans, a white tank top and floral kimono. I love both of these so much and they give such variety to her engagement session!

Here are some examples of outfits you could mix and match for your engagement session! For the warm seasons, try to stay away from jean shorts and utilize a cute romper, or a dress! For the cold months, incorporate cardigans and tights with your dresses or casual outfits! Chunky booties and heels are always a winner because they are adorable and easy to walk in! Make sure to remember to accessorize with a necklace, earrings or bangles!

*** Getting your ring cleaned will make sure it sparkles and shines!

Style Tips For The Guys:

Its a lot easier than you might think to get your guy photo ready!!!   A simple style that I love because it goes with everything is a pair of dress pants or khakis, and a solid color button down shirt! Dress shoes, or even neutral colored boat slip on shoes look really nice! Try to stay away from open toed shoes or shorts.  You can add a tie to make the outfit look more dressy, or keep it plain. One accessory I find that takes any outfit to the next level is a belt! It even works with dark jeans and helps to add some structure!  You can keep your man in the same outfit and switch out a shirt, or remove a tie to go better with your casual outfit. You can also make him change into a whole new outfit, its completely up to you!

***STYLE TIP!  long sleeve shirts look better than short sleeve, if its very hot outside, have him roll them up to his elbows, it will feel cooler but keep a more polished look!  For those colder months, layers look AMAZING! have him layer with a nice jacket or cardigan!

I hope this style guide will help you in choosing your engagement outfits! Remember that if you are not comfortable, it will show in your photos. Make sure you are confident in what you are wearing.  As a Des Moines Iowa Wedding Photographer, we get all the seasons and all types of weather!
